I loved Helter Shelter. It’s about frustration, extreme personalities, tragedy, seeking help, love and triumph.
Smart has written in an energetic and questioning tone that is engaging and insightful. Even though situations seem hopeless at times, in the end, self-reflection and the courage to honestly analyze does change the direction of her life.

Niki Smart has done it again. She's written another page turner about her unconventional life that's unflinchingly raw and transparent. She throws the doors of her addictions wide open for us to gape at, all the while holding it down as a single mum and teen crises counselor. I applaud her courage, and her commitment to healing.
If you haven't read her first book, Hell Camp, it's a must read. She's a wonderful writer who woos us through humor and great storytelling. Can't wait for another addition to her weird, wacky, wonder-filled life.-------Debbie B.

For being a book that tackles brutal situations in tough detail, I was surprised how addicted I was to reading Niki's full story. Niki's inner dialogue when written out is like a friend's hand you get to hold all the way through.
As someone who has experienced abuse as a child, it was cathartic to learn about another's experience. It helps reassure me that I'm not alone and gives me perspective on my own life. And knowing that Niki survives every trial she has endured and remains a strong, intelligent and openly honest woman is extremely reassuring.
I was so glad for the chance to read her story and avidly admire her ability to put a humorous spin on even the most troubling of situations.---Jessica A.
Niki Smart is a brave writer, accounting for a difficult childhood in an uprising country divided by Apartheid. It's a fascinating read, hilariously funny, but also giving me a lot of food for thought. I can only highly recommend this fearless book to readers who want to go with Niki on a very personal, unique journey from hellish beginnings to a more balanced adult life.---Evie S.
